Student Profiles: Dominique White
Biology major Dominique White, C'2015, recently returned from South Africa, where she spent her summer conducting public health research. With support from the Enhancing Global Research and Education in STEM at Spelman College program, White spent four weeks participating in the research project, “Malaria: Disease Literacy and Prevention Knowledge,” which examined the health inequalities that linger in the post-apartheid country.
Gaining cultural and academic exposure, White also participated in a three-day homestay in rural South Africa, where she spent time speaking with area women about access to clinics that were several hours away on foot. In addition to research, some of her most memorable experiences included eating termites and worms, slaughtering a chicken, visiting famous landmarks, and hiking in the rural area of Hamkuya.
