Student Profiles: Nartezya Dykes, C'2014
Nartezya Dykes will be honored onstage at the 2014 Black Entertainment Television’s and United Negro College Fund’s Evening of Stars. She will be featured as a Buick Achievers Scholar and will share her story in her journey to becoming a scholar. The scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Engineering or Technology with an interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries. The program is designed to honor distinguished students who attend a historically black college or university and have made the commitment to excel as leaders in the classroom and beyond.
Dykes is a graduating senior from Franklinton, Louisiana majoring in Computer and Information Sciences with a minor in Mathematics. She is currently an intern at Lockheed Martin IS/GS Civil working on a number of projects as an IT Analyst. Dykes has also recently completed a summer internship in Renton, WA with the Boeing Company as a Systems Analyst. Furthermore, she has participated in research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. Her education went abroad when she took the opportunity to present one of her research projects in Munich, Germany. This resulted in her first international presentation entitled, Charles Creek Flood Zone Modeling: A Correlation Study of Environmental Conditions Water Level in the Pasquotank Watershed.
In addition to her multiple internships, Dykes has received numerous awards, scholarships,
recognitions and honors during her voyage at Spelman College. She is proud to be a Buick Achievers
Scholar, UNCF Liberty Mutual Insurance Scholar, Boeing Scholar, AMTRAK Travel Scholar, Xerox
Technical Minority Scholar and S-Cubed STEM Scholar. Dykes is an active member of the Upsilon Pi
Epsilon International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines (UPE) and serves as
treasurer of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). She also is the Evaluation Assistant in the
Spelman STARS Leadership Corps along with being a member of the Spelman Programming Team and
POSSE (Protecting our Spelman Sisters Everyday).
The star-studded gala will air on BET on April 13, 2014, at 10 p.m. EST and on Centric at 12 a.m.
