A Jazz Song for Brita-Ray

Before I was an unborn child
Or mentally conceived,
I didn’t think that I could have you
'Til a lady in satin made me believe—
A sophisticated lady.
Although her moon was always blue,
Her love had always kept me warm—
Until the very thought of you.
The only woman in my life
Whose pain I loved to have,
She was torn between the man she loved
And all her priceless jazz.
When I listened to her talk about you
I thought she'd walk away,
So we made a compromise:
You both would share the night and day.
Her fine and mellow voice
Would awaken us from our sleep,
You found us both comforting,
Embracing all of our music between the sheets.

When she learned to accept you, us,
And me, myself and I,
I thought our love triangle was complete
Until the day she said goodbye.
She said she knew I cared more for you
But would be back from time to time.
She seemed to float through the air and out the door
While singing "If you were mine."
So when people ask what happened,
I say "Ain't nobody's business" because I haven't got a clue,
I still make time for her
But my heart belongs to you.
Before I was an unborn child
Or mentally conceived,
I didn't think that I could have you,
'Til Lady Day made me believe.
