Purpose

This second Bush-Hewlett Grant at Spelman College, “Building Virtual Learning Communities: Using the Web for Electronic Research, Collaboration and Publication,” is designed as a multi-discipline faculty development program that blends technology with independent student projects to deepen student skills in communication, research, and critical thinking. The grant will provide training and support for 27 faculty fellows over a period of three years. Over time, the faculty projects will develop websites that highlight some specific feature of the students’ academic production—in text and multimedia.

The design of the grant follows the findings of the 1987 article, “Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education,” especially as they are mediated by the 1996 article, “Implementing the Seven Principles: Technology as Lever.”
