Passage 3. Sheena Young

When I first saw a Ganguro girl in Japan last fall, I was amazed. I could not believe that there were girls in Japan walking around with darkened skin. My first instinct was to get the girl on video to show people at home. I thought that it was interesting how Japanese society wanted to emulate western culture. I never thought of it in a negative way. To me, it didn’t seem as though Japanese girls were getting dressed up and putting on dark make-up to mock the African American culture but, instead, to idolize it.
