The passages below are excerpted from essays on the Japanese Geisha
and Ganguro that Professor Xuexin Liu assigned to her advanced students
in Japanese. Written in English, these passages were selected through
a competition to accompany the exhibit in the Spelman Museum of Fine
Art by iona rozeal brown, a3, an afro-asiatic allegory. Professor Liu’s
students then shaped loose translations of these excerpts in Japanese.
So, below are some young African American perceptions of the Ganguro
culture in Japan and the artistic backdrop of Japanese woodcuts of the
Geisha that inform Ms. brown’s art. The Bush-Hewlett Grant—Building
Virtual Learning Communities—also supported this commentary and
translation.
