Spelman's Guidelines

There are several options available for participating in the College’s Scholarship Program, as shown below. Scholarships may provide assistance for tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, and other educational expenses at varying amounts.

There are several options available for participating in the College’s Scholarship Program, as shown below. Scholarship contributions may provide assistance for tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, and other educational expenses at varying amounts.  All scholarship gifts to Spelman College are tax deductible.

Spelman College General Scholarship Fund

One time gift or annual funding

Gifts to the General Scholarship Fund supplement the College's budget designated for need-based scholarships. Recipients are selected by the Office of Financial Aid. Contributions are not tracked for stewardship purposed.

Awards are made at the discretion of the Office of Financial Aid.

Spelman College Endowed Scholarship Fund

Any gift amount

One time gift or annual funding

Gifts to the Endowed Scholarship Fund supplement the College's budget designated for scholarships. Recipients are selected by the Office of Financial Aid. Contributions are not tracked for stewardship purposed.

Total amount available is based on the College's endowment spending policy. Awards are made at the discretion of the Office of Financial Aid.

Spelman College Book Award Fund

Any gift amount.

One time gift or annual funding.

Gifts to the Spelman College Book Award Fund provide books and supplies for students with financial need. Recipients are selected by the Office of Financial Aid.

Awards are made at the discretion of the Office of Financial Aid.

Named Annual Scholarship

$5,000 minimum.

Three year renewal commitment requested.

Established upon receipt of a gift of $5,000 or complete funding to be received within one year of the initial gift.

Donor may name the scholarship and set award criteria following the options available on the criteria form.

The Office of Financial Aid selects recipients based on award criteria as outlined in the scholarship agreement.

The minimum award amount per scholarship is $5000. The award may be specified portion of a lump-sum contribution greater than $5,000 that is awarded over a period of time.

Named Endowed Scholarship Fund

$50,000 minimum

Pledge must be completed within 5 years.

The endowment is maintained in perpetuity and the corpus is invested according to the Colleges Investment Policy.

Donor may name the scholarship and set award criteria following the options available on the criteria form.

The endowment is maintained in perpetuity and the corpus is invested according to the College's Investment Policy.

The Scholarship Committee selects recipients based on award criteria.

The award amount is based on the principle's earnings and is calculated using the College's spending rule which varies between 4.75% - 5.25%. Donors may continue to add to the endowment to build the fund and increase the award amount.
