Alumnae Profile: Monae White, C'2014
Spelman Alumna to Serve as Presidential Appointee
Recent Spelman graduate and former Social Justice Associate Monae White has been granted a presidential appointment by the Obama Administration. After a rigorous interview process, White was selected to join the White House Liaison Office at the Department of Education.
Appointees serve at the pleasure of the President in various roles at agencies, and are tasked with guiding an agency to achieve the President’s policies. Political Appointees make up less than 1% of the federal workforce and selection for an appointment is extremely competitive.
White, who graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Spelman on May 18, 2014, will serve as a Confidential Assistant responsible for a variety of special assignments that are highly sensitive in nature. She will support high level assistants and senior staff most notably as a scheduler and strategic planner for the staff in the Office of the Secretary.
Additionally, White will gather background material on special cases and will be responsible for interpreting the findings and prepare special reports or studies. She will also help develop constructive recommendations for solving significant operational and program implementation problems.
White is no stranger to government or politics. She has interned with the U.S. State Department and engaged with the Office of Central European Affairs; the Office of U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulsk; and the Office of U.S. Congresswoman Donna Edwards
She is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, and the Golden Key International Honour Society.
