Alumnae Profiles: Kitiya King, C'1996
Kitiya King is a veteran to the beauty business who graduated from Spelman College with a degree in chemistry in 1996. She is now a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, and makeup artist. It was during her pregnancy that she became inspired to start a luxury nail lacquer line. King had a very difficult time finding non-toxic and fashion-forward nail polish so she decided to launch Mischo Luxury Nail Lacquer, a non-toxic, cruelty-free nail lacquer collection.
The line is 5FREE, which means it does not contain: formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, DBP, or camphor. These are all harmful toxins responsible for causing birth defects, reproductive issues and cancer. Toxins such as these should be nowhere near your nails. Creating the formulation itself was very challenging because King was committed to ensuring only non-toxic ingredients were used. After many months of testing samples, she finally landed on a formulation she was pleased with. Because of her love of fashion, the shades are all inspired by the runways.
The formula is easy to apply, chip-resistent and delivers perfect shine. The debut collection, called The Fashion Week Collection, is made up of seven shades inspired by the fashion weeks around the world (New York, London, Milan & Paris) and the beauty superstars who work tirelessly backstage to make designers’ visions come to life!
Her work motto is inspired by a quote from Sheryl Sandberg: "Speak Up. Believe in Yourself. Take Risks." Although her current focus is on the nail lacquer collection, King plans to unveil a color cosmetics collection next Fall.
