Alumnae Profiles: Alyssa Gowens, C'2002

Since her destiny was politics, Alyssa Gowens came to Spelman to major in political science. As judiciary legislative counsel for Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.), who serves on several subcommittees, Ms. Gowens manages a spectrum of Judiciary Committee issues with a special emphasis on copyright, trademark, patent, antitrust and immigration law. “I was so fortunate to have very rigorous classes
taught by incredibly smart and politically astute teachers,” said Ms. Gowens, a cum laude graduate who was also involved in the student government association. “Dr. Pedascleaux and Dr. Davis always had engaging classes and challenged us to fully engage in the political process on all levels.”

After Spelman, Ms. Gowens began a judicial clerkship for the Judge Jeanette Clark in the District of Columbia Superior Court. In 2007, she joined the office of Rep. Watt as legislative assistant and functioned as a liaison to the Congressional Black Caucus. In 2009, she was promoted to Judiciary Legislative Counsel and reprioritized her legislative portfolio to focus primarily on intellectual property, antitrust and telecommunications law and policy. “Before working on the Hill, I wasn’t aware of the many opportunities available until about a year ago,” said Ms. Gowens. “I explored some of the options and found myself working on and loving Capitol Hill.”
