Alumnae: Alumnae Entrepreneurs

Veronica N. Chapman, C'2003

In 2012, Veronica Chapman was named Entrepreneur of the Week by Black Enterprise for My Crowning Jewel, a head-wrap designing company. Born from a desire to fund her youth organization Boxxout, My Crowning Jewel offers various head wraps for daytime wear and nighttime wraps.

“When I grew tired of the worn headscarves and tired bonnets I had to use to protect my hair at night, I realized other women were unhappy with their options as well and the vision for My Crowning Jewel was born,” said Chapman who projects her company revenues to be $20,000 this year.

She said while a student at Spelman, she launched an organization call SIFE, an acronym for Students in Free Enterprise. “We created awesome educational programming for youth and families surrounding the Spelman community that focused on entrepreneurship and other career and life skills required for success,” said Chapman whose youth organization works to connect teens in urban, low-income communities with opportunities to excel.

She received $10,000 for My Crowing Jewel from 100 Urban Entrepreneurs, a nonprofit foundation that supports minority entrepreneurship at its earliest stages. “I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so entrepreneurial thought and action were always part of my upbringing,” said Chapman. “In addition, I am really committed to living a purpose-driven life, so I had to commit to launching my own company.”
