I am proud to be the president of an institution with a long-standing commitment to academic excellence, leadership and positive social change. As the country’s oldest historically
Black college for women, Spelman College has a national reputation for promoting academic excellence and a rich history of producing Black women leaders. The College is ranked on the U.S. News and World Report's list of Top 75 Liberal Arts Colleges, 2005 edition.

To build on our legacy and become even more competitive as a leading liberal arts college, we have launched Spelman ALIVE, a five-part initiative that promotes:

A cademic Excellence through the recruitment and retention of the next generation of faculty committed to the liberal arts college model of excellence in teaching, the recruitment and retention of strong students, and continual growth in scholarship and shared responsibility for service.

L eadership Development through community service and the development of a new Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, which will become a national resource on the leadership development of women of color.

I mproving Our Environment to strengthen our infrastructure and enhance our neighborhood by working with our community partners.

V isibility of Our Achievements so that the accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, and our alumnae are apparent to everyone.

E xemplary Customer Service, creating a pervasive sense of hospitality and generosity of spirit for each other and everyone who passes through Spelman College's gates.
