Lab Operations

The Lab Operations Manager is responsible for the management and support of Spelman College academic computing labs which include electronic classrooms, general computing laboratories, and student research computers. The lab staff which provides most lab related services includes the operations manager, weekend/evening supervisors, lab monitors, and is also serviced by a number of MIT technical staff members. The labs are open to all registered students, regardless of discipline, who desire to work on class assignments, check email or surf the Web.

Spelman College electronic classrooms and computer Laboratories may include the following hardware :

  • PC workstations (General Computer Laboratory, Social Science, Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Foreign Language, and Environmental Science departments)
  • Macintosh workstations (General Computer Laboratory, Writing Center, Foreign Language, and Art departments)
  • Sun Solaris workstations (Computer Science and Physics departments)

Computer Laboratory Operating Hours Fall/Spring Semesters

The General Computer Laboratory is open twenty-four hours daily during the academic year (except holidays and official college closings). Additional open access computer labs are located in Giles 201& 316 and Cosby Writing Center 332. Individual hours of operation are posted in each lab.

Students are required to use the electronic attendance tracker by swiping their ID cards when entering and leaving the lab. Laboratory monitors/coordinators are on duty to provide informed, patient and equal assistance to computer users during the day, evening, and on weekends. All the computers in the electronic classrooms and computer labs have standardized software packages (i.e. Microsoft Office, anti-virus, Internet Explorer, and Deep Freeze), installed campus wide. Additional software is installed at the request of departments overseeing the labs and is specific to the department's discipline.

Software

Software for computers in the labs first consist of MIT campus wide standardized software packages, i.e. Microsoft Office. Additional software is installed by the request of Departments using the labs and the Academic Computing Committee.
