SCOLA Satellite Services
The Educational Media Center offers SCOLA as a daily service available through one of our two satellite reception dishes located on top of the Cosby Center. SCOLA is a non-profit, educational organization which retransmits television programs digitally on 2 channels 24 hours a day, seven days a week from over 40 countries around the world. International News is transmitted on Channel 1, and Channel 2 offers International Variety programming including: documentaries, entertainment and programs for children. The Media Center pays a yearly subscription fee for use of SCOLA programs.
In addition to the two channels of programming from all over the world, SCOLA offers a practical teaching tool called Insta-Class which is a unique transcription service consisting of 5-10 minutes of a news broadcast. The subscriber records this broadcast and later, receives from SCOLA a transcription with vocabulary notes. Insta-Class is produced weekly and distributed via Internet and faxed to SCOLA affiliates. Taking the student another step closer to becoming language literate, SCOLA plans to add a third and fourth channel of international interest. Channel 3 presents classes in disciplines such as mathematics, science, history, etc. Channel 4 will teach the less commonly taught languages. An electronic study hall, with instructor, will accompany classes on channels 3 and 4. You may call the Educational Media Center with questions or for technical advice on how to receive SCOLA.
