Bereavement Leave
Employees who wish to take time off
due to the death of an immediate family member should notify their
supervisor immediately. Spelman defines "immediate family" as
the employee’s spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild,
aunt, uncle, parent-in-law, stepchild, daughter-in-law, son-in-law or
the sibling of the employee’s spouse.
Paid bereavement leave will be
provided to eligible employees in the following classification(s):
ü
Regular full-time employees
ü
Regular part-time employees
Eligible employees are granted paid
time off during periods of mourning and bereavement, as follows:
Five
(5) Days Death of a parent,
spouse, parent-in-law, child, stepchild, sister, brother or the sibling
of the employee’s spouse.
Three
(3) Days Death of
grandparents, grandchild, aunt, uncle, son-in-law, daughter-in-law.
Bereavement pay is calculated based
on the base pay rate at the time of absence and will not include any
special forms of compensation, such as incentives, commissions,
bonuses, or shift differentials.
Bereavement leave will normally be
granted unless there are unusual business needs or staffing requirements.
Employees may, with their supervisor’s approval, use vacation or sick
time for additional time off as necessary.
