Workers'
Compensation Insurance
Spelman College insures all employees against accidental injuries
occurring on the job, in accordance with the Georgia Workers’
Compensation Law. Coverage begins on date of employment and covers any
injury or illness sustained in the course of employment that requires
medical, surgical, or hospital treatment. Employees must report all
accidents immediately to their supervisor or department manager, and
the supervisor must notify the Office of Human Resources within 24
hours. If the supervisor or department manager is not available the
employee should notify the Office of Human Resources. No matter how
minor an on-the-job injury may appear, it is important that it is
reported immediately. This will enable an eligible employee to qualify
for coverage as quickly as possible.
College Compensation During A Work Related Injury/Illness
If it is determined by the physician that the injured employee is
placed in a no work status (loss time), the employee has to be absent
from work for seven (7) days due to the injury/illness before becoming
eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. During this seven (7) day
period, the employee may use any accumulated sick leave (if available).
If no sick leave time is available, the employee may use their
available vacation leave. When sick leave nor vacation leave is
available the employee is in a without pay status until they become
eligible for workers compensation benefits.
Workers’ Compensation Pay
Workers’ compensation benefits pay a weekly income benefit of
two-thirds of your average weekly wage, but not more than $400 per week
for a work related injury. If your injury/illness requires you to miss
work for more than 21 consecutive days you will be paid for the first
seven (7) days.
