Sustainable Spelman
A Choice to Change the World
“A choice to change the world also means taking responsibility for the ways each of us is always changing the world - and not always for the better – through our excessive consumption of the world’s resources. Understanding our own environmental impact and seeking to reduce it is a choice that all of us can make every day.”

Green Cafe Connects Campus With Local Farmers
To help increase sustainability awareness throughout the greater Spelman College community, Spelman Dining Services recently launched “Green Café,” an initiative designed to showcase local food and build collaborative efforts with local farmers.
Using herbs from gardens around campus and locally grown foods, members of the Sustainable Spelman committee and students leading campus sustainability efforts enjoyed dishes such as collard greens and oyster mushroom spring rolls with thai basil dipping sauce; sweet potato and herb-stuffed chicken breast; rosemary-grilled zucchini and fresh pea and basil puree; and cantaloupe and tofu ambrosia with mint. Participants also gained information and insight on the importance of eating local food from Charles Henry, a local African-American farmer with the Coastal Georgia Small Farmers Co-op.
As mentioned in the October issue of Inside Spelman, the committee is now focusing on the "Make a Difference Monday" campaign, an initiative aimed at the importance of sustainable food practices.
Spelman's 'Strengthening the Core'
Strategic Plan for 2015:
Global Perspective, by working to achieve a "greener" Spelman
Operational excellence, which will create an optimal experience for all campus visitors
Accountability evident in greater cross-institutional cooperation, improved efficiency, and consistently excellent service
Leadership opportunities, including professional development and training, for continued growth and development
Service and community engagement beyond our gates
Because the "G" in Spelman's Strategic Plan represents Global Perspective, by working to achieve a “greener” Spelman, we are currently involved in a number of initiatives to create a more environmentally sustainable campus. Spelman College is committed to establish Spelman as a model academic institution in this regard, and our leadership will affect lives
positive social change.
