Arienne Jones, a history major and Spanish minor, is a member of the graduating class of 2012.
Attending Spelman afforded Jones the opportunity to pursue a liberal arts education while developing her leadership skills. As a Bonner Scholar, she served the program in numerous capacities, including Community Impact Intern, Congress Representative and Senior Intern. She was also a member of the 2012 Women of Excellence Leadership class and the Beta Iota Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Jones' discipline and academic efforts during the years have been recognized in a number of ways. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi Spanish National Honor Society, Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars, and was a recipient of the Dean's Award for Academic Excellence during her Domestic Exchange experience at Stanford University.
Jones' desire to live and work abroad is a product of her study abroad experience in Granada, Spain, during the fall semester of 2010. While in Granada, she lived with a host family and had the opportunity to volunteer with a local grade school where she was a teacher's aide for several levels of English grammar. Working with her students and bonding with native Granadinos inspired Jones' desire to return to Spain and teach children the beauty of being able to communicate with other cultures. She applied for the Fulbright Scholarship, in particular, because she appreciates the scholarship's mission of fostering leadership, learning, and empathy across various cultures.
As a Fulbright Scholar, Jones will be an English Teaching Assistant in a secondary school in either Madrid or Valencia, Spain. In her spare time, she will volunteer with a local governmental agency.
Upon completion of her grant, Arienne plans to enter Tulane Law School and study international and comparative law. Her ultimate goal is to work for the government.
