Summer Research Experience for High School Students

2009 ACS Project SEED Program
The American Chemical Society (ACS) Project SEED is the 2009 winner of the National Science Board (NSB) Public Service Award. NSB recognizes people and organizations that have increased public understanding of science and engineering.

Project SEED offers a unique opportunity for high school students to spend the summer conducting scientific research with a scientist in a laboratory setting. In addition, participants are eligible for travel awards and scholarships to college. This program has reached more than 7,500 economically disadvantaged students across the nation, many of whom were the first in their family to attend college.

Spelman College has been awarded an ACS (American Chemical Society) Project SEED grant. Students who are rising juniors or seniors in high school and who have completed at least one high school chemistry course are eligible to apply. Students must be recognized as economically disadvantaged to be considered for Project SEED.

Preference will be given to a student whose maximum family income is below $34,340 or does not exceed 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for family size.  An exception to the guideline may be given to students whose combined family income does not exceed $48,260 per year if:

  • You are African-American, Hispanic, or Native American
  • Historically, your family is underrepresented in science
  • Your parents/guardians did not attend college
  • You live in a single parent household
  • You are a member of a large family

Students will earn $2800 to participate in an 8 week research experience in the Chemistry department at Spelman College starting June1 and ending July 24. The program culminates in a research presentation (poster) at the Spelman College Summer Research Symposium.

This is a non-residential program.  Housing, transportation and meals will not be provided.  Students must have transportation to and from the Spelman campus.
