History
The Spelman College Center for Biomedical and Behavioral Research was founded in 1996 as the Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) program at Spelman College. It is comprised of faculty involved in biomedical and behavioral NIH supported research at Spelman College. Phase I of the project was the defining stage. RIMI was successful in determining and building the infrastructure necessary to support the scientific research enterprise at the College. This phase also impacted the institution by improving the facilities dedicated to biomedical and behavioral research, as well as, facilitating the purchase of several high-end research tools.

RIMI Goals
Phase II of the RIMI program revolves around three specific aims:

1) Faculty Development: Faculty Development focuses on start-up support and structured mentoring for junior faculty, seed awards for all Center faculty, workshops, symposia and special incentives.

2) Research Administration Infrastructure:Research Administrative Infrastructure is a continuation of the Phase I project that focuses on building an infrastructure that is conducive to a highly productive research capacity.

3) Core Laboratories: Core Laboratories provide multi-user shared laboratory facilities that serve the needs of RIMI investigators and other independently funded investigators.
