Model Institutions for Excellence (MIE)
Enhancing a Rich Tradition
Spelman
has prepared more than six generations
of African Americans to reach
the highest levels of academic,
community and professional achievement.
In 1994, the Model Institutions for Excellence (MIE) Program
began as part of a comprehensive, nationwide effort to upgrade
the quality of science, engineering and mathematics (SEM)
education. Sponsored
by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),
the MIE Program enhances Spelman's impressive record of preparing
women for science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) careers.
The program provides students with research opportunities,
strengthens Spelman's SEM infrastructure, supports curriculum
and teaching reforms, and establishes early intervention
activities for SEM students.
Spelman is one of only six higher education institutions
in
the nation chosen to serve as a Model Institution for Excellence
and granted major funding by the National Science Foundation
and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The
other MIE Institutions are:
- Bowie State University
- Oglala
Lakota
College
- University
of
Texas
El
Paso
- Universidad
Metropolitana
- Xavier
University
MIE emphasizes long-term institutional support to empower
the six institutions to strengthen SEM infrastructures and
encourage and support students from college through graduate
school. The goal of each MIE institution is to serve as a
model of high quality SEM education that can be replicated
at other colleges and universities nationwide. The MIE schools
concentrate on recruitment and retention of SEM students,
counseling, academic enrichment, encouraging students to
attend graduate schools, enhancing the education of SEM students,
and infrastructure development.
