Summer Training About Research Techniques Program

The Summer Training About Research Techniques (START) Program is designed for incoming first-year students and rising sophomores who have demonstrated a desire to learn more about biomedical and/or behavioral research. Students will be placed into active research labs for six weeks.

Students will receive a salary upon completion of 40 hours per week of laboratory training consisting of research, interwoven with instruction in the fundamentals of good research practices, techniques, critical thinking, and information on research careers. Students will be required to present their research projects at the Summer Research Symposium.

START Scholars will be required to reside on campus during the six week program. The RISE Program cannot pay for housing expenses. The salary provided during the summer will help offset the cost of on campus housing.

Transportation expenses are reimbursed for one round trip between your home address and Spelman up to $300.00. Travel will only be paid to those students whose permanent addresses are more than fifty miles away from Spelman. Travel by a private automobile will be reimbursed at the current mileage rate .
