The PKAL Atlanta Regional Network Fall Meeting will focus on active learning strategies in the STEM disciplines. The past twenty years have seen an explosion of new instructional pedagogies that focus on student-centered learning.

While the “sage on the stage” lecture format is not being completely abandoned in the classroom, faculty are now incorporating strategies such as case studies, process-oriented, guided-inquiry learning worksheets, and problem-solving activities that invoke cooperative learning. Advanced learning software allows students to work toward subject mastery with more sophisticated systems, based on artificial intelligence, by assessing student knowledge and weaknesses.

Workshop attendees will learn more about these types of strategies and how they are being implemented in STEM courses at various colleges and universities in the region. In addition, Dr. Kamau Bobb, a research scientist for Outreach and Policy Analysis at Georgia Tech’s CEISMC and coordinator of the University System of Georgia’s system-wide STEM Initiative, will be the keynote speaker.

Dr. Kelly Mack, the new executive director of PKAL,  will be present. Other activities include panels and workshops with Spelman STEM faculty who will discuss a variety of instructional topics.
