College Hosts DOE Naming Ceremony
for New Science Alcove
Earlier this week, the College hosted a Department of Energy visit and naming ceremony in the Albro-Falconer-Manley Science Center.
Held from noon to 2 p.m., the event recognizes $2.6 million in DOE funding that established the Spelman College Center for Environmental Science, Education and Research. Located on the third floor outside of the environmental sciences and studies program office, the area will be renamed the "Department of Energy Environmental Science Alcove." The campus community is invited to attend.
Recognizing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in teaching and research, the curriculum in Environmental Science and Studies (ESS) is designed to enhance scientific inquiry and to strengthen scientific competence. ESS aims to prepare students for graduate studies and provide opportunities for careers in environmental sciences, the natural sciences, public health and medical schools.
Objective
Through the course sequence in ESS, students will:
- Recognize major concepts in environmental sciences and demonstrate in-depth understanding of the environment.
- Gain analytical skills, critical thinking, and demonstrate problem-solving skills using scientific techniques.
- Use their training as a framework to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the sciences.
- Possess the knowledge and training for entering graduate school or for entering the job market related to the environmental.
