English Department Hosts 2012 'Mothering Our Daughters' Conference
The Spelman College English department will host the 2012 Mothering Our Daughters conference on Saturday, April 28, at 9:30 a.m. in the Cosby Academic Center.
Sponsored in collaboration with Aechelon Educational Services LLC, this student-led event, themed "Mothering Our Daughters: The Makings of You," provides mothers and mentors of girls ages 7 to 17 the opportunity to talk about the influence of the media on growth and self-esteem.
For the first time this year, a session will be held for men with daughters and/or female mentees. Held on Friday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m., this free event is open to both men and women who want to help young girls develop a healthy self-image.
During the Mothering Our Daughters event, elementary and middle-school students will create arts and crafts activities and vision boards, and participate in an essay contest explaining why their mom/mentor is the best "Em" ever.
Registration for the MOD conference is $8 for adults and $5 for girls ages 7-18. To pre-register for both events, please contact Tarshia Stanley, Ph.D., chairperson and associate professor of English, at tstanley@spelman.edu or 404-270-5578.
