Campus Community

Science at Spelman College includes over 40 faculty in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics departments.

The biology department includes 11 tenured or tenure-track faculty, who represent a broad spectrum of biological research areas and contribute to a comprehensive biology curriculum. The faculty is supplemented by three full time laboratory educators who contribute significant scientific expertise in their role as instructors in lab-based courses. Additionally, two administrative staff maintain the daily activities of the department, and several research technicians provide technical support for faculty research. A Core Lab Technician maintains general research and training facilities available to all Science faculty.

Biology faculty at Spelman receive substantial support for faculty development in research and teaching from a variety of extramural sources including NIH, NSF, and HHMI. Student-faculty collaborative research is supported by ongoing funding from a variety of federal and private programs.

In addition, biology faculty have developed an impressive track record of substantial individual research support in the form of competitive awards from extramural sources such as NIH and NSF.

The Center for Biomedical and Behavioral Research supports junior faculty development and sponsors an ongoing seminar program that brings biomedical investigators from around the country to present their research to the Spelman science community.

Atlanta Community

Spelman College is located in the heart of a thriving academic research community in metropolitan Atlanta. Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center consortium, providing access to community and resources of five other participating institutions including Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and the Morehouse School of Medicine.

Additionally, Spelman benefits from many opportunities for interaction with four major research universities nearby including Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, and the University of Georgia.

The Atlanta-based Center for Behavioral Neuroscience connects Spelman neuroscientists with investigators across the metro area. Grant funded programming between Emory University and Spelman College supports mutually beneficial research and teaching exchanges between the two institutions.
