Spelman College, a historically black college for women, is pleased to announce the 2008 Howard Hughes Biomedical Summer Science Program (SSP). The program is a five week non-residential program for high school students interested in pursuing a career in biology, biochemistry, medicine or other life-science related fields.

The curriculum is designed to provide students with an integrative science educational experience, while developing their laboratory, research and scientific literacy skills. Students will learn about the breadth and variety of biology disciplines by engaging in hands on projects and interacting with scientists in their “native” professional environment. The curriculum also provides students an opportunity to develop interpersonal skills by participating in group projects and scientific presentations.

Eligibility

Applicants must be rising 12th graders enrolled in an accredited high school program, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have demonstrated an interest in science and mathematics. An official transcript and teacher recommendation forms must accompany the online application for applications to be considered complete. Attendance and full participation are essential for achievement of program goals.

Students may not participate in other summer activities or programs concurrently with the five-week HHMI program. Participants in the 2008 Howard Hughes Biomedical Summer Science Program must have residential accommodations in the Metropolitan Atlanta area. The program is not responsible for providing housing accommodations or transportation costs to the program.

Recommendations

Confidential recommendation forms from both a mathematics and a science teacher are required. The recommendation forms will be accepted by mail only. Applications without both recommendations are incomplete and will not be considered.

Transcripts

An official transcript should be submitted in an envelope that is sealed and signed by a designated school official. The GPA should be converted to a 4.0 scale or a conversation scale must be included with the transcript. Transcripts will be accepted by mail only. Applications without an official transcript are incomplete and will not be considered.

Stipend

A stipend for a five-week period, June 16, 2008- July 18, 2008, will be provided for students that successfully complete the program. This stipend is subject to federal and state taxes.
