Howard Hughes Program
Spelman Mentor Network
The Spelman Mentor Network pairs rising high school senior girls with mentors, Spelman alumnae who have pursued professional careers in biomedical sciences. The high school students (protégés) will be paired with alumnae (mentors) for a three year relationship beginning in their senior year of high school and continuing through their sophomore year of college. This mentoring relationship will encourage high school students to pursue undergraduate training in the sciences. The network will adopt a team approach that engages a science teacher from the student’s high school and a family member or guardian in supporting the student’s relationship with her mentor.
Protégés will be identified by high school teacher as students with interest in science and the potential to pursue science training in college. Mentors and Protégés will maintain regular contact primarily via electronic communication (email, blogs, etc). Protégés and mentoring teams will assemble at an Annual Mentor Network Symposium.
Alumnae that are interested in serving as a mentor in the network, must be pursuing science careers and within 3-7 years of graduation from Spelman. If you are interested in serving as a Spelman Network Mentor please visit the website below and complete the Mentor Profile.
