Biology Professor Reaches Out to Overseas
Universities for Research Collaborations
Dr. Ikhide Imumorin of the Spelman College Biology Department traveled to Nigeria in May and June to initiate a collaborative project to better understand the evolutionary history and genetic relatedness of Nigerian small ruminants (goat and sheep). During the trip, Dr. Imumorin met with investigators at Federal University of Technology, Akure and the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta regarding his research.
His trip also included a visit to Britain to discuss potential research collaborations with scientists at the Imperial College of University of London, University of Manchester and Oxford University. These research relationships will help to expand his research work in human disease genetics.

Mammalian Genetics and Genetics of Complex Human Diseases. Bovine genomics studies to understand the genetic basis of animal performance and genetic variation in Nigerian livestock for conservation of indigenous germplasm. Elucidate evidence that epigenetic changes might lead to metabolic disorders such as type-2 diabetes and hypertension . New methodological issues regarding the Mendelian assumptions of linkage analysis used in genome-wide scans for complex traits and intra-uterine fetal metabolic programming via aberrant gene expression that might set the stage for the cluster of adult-onset metabolic diseases. Our long term objective is to identify genes with therapeutic and diagnostic applications in human medicine.
