Artist's Statement

"My mixed media drawings and paintings provide a visual metaphor for my interest in cultural hybridity and the interconnectedness of all cultures. By juxtaposing seemingly incongruous elements from indigenous, third world, and colonialist societies, intersections of the New World become visible. I often incorporate the signs and symbols of the polyglot cultures of the Americas, particularly Haiti. The world views of Judeo-Christian and African diaspora religions such as vodou also inform the work. Memories of ancestors and homelands of origin are intertwined within a contemporary context. The narratives are simultaneously personal, political, and universal, each investigating some part in relation to the whole. Ultimately, my work seeks to expand and reconcile simplistic notions of a dominant 'pure' heritage with the syncretic nature of the peoples of the Americas. My art is a labor of hope for the full participation of all peoples in our multi-cultured society."
