Sociology and Anthropology

The Curriculum

The department offers two majors, a BA in Sociology and a BA in Sociology and Anthropology. Both the majors consist of forty-four (44) semester hours; that is, twenty-eight (28) hours of major core courses and sixteen (16) hours of departmental electives. The Major in Sociology and Anthropology is awarded to students who complete the requirements of the anthropology concentration by taking at least sixteen (16) hours of anthropology electives courses.

Sociology/Anthropology Thesis

In the senior year, all Department majors complete a thesis involving original research that is designed by each student on a topic of her choice. Some of the most laudable research projects have been original studies of the following: interracial adoption and its effects on children; an analysis of data from the Georgia Department of Corrections on sentencing patterns and racial bias; a case study of the Rape Crisis Center at Grady Memorial Hospital; a comparative analysis of black women's social thought in the United States and the Caribbean; and an analysis of women's images in twenty years of advertisements appearing in Ebony magazine.

Developing Computer and Research Skills

Student majors are required to complete courses that enhance their computational, computing and research skills. Building upon the college computer literacy requirement, the course in Research Methods exposes students to the tools and techniques of social and cultural research, including the following: the use of computers in networked environment; the use of spreadsheets and statistical packages to analyze large and small datasets; introduction to ethnographic research methods; survey design and questionnaire construction; library research including electronic databases; coding and data entry; writing research reports and proposals for funding.
