Expenses and Financial Aid

Students pay the full cost of the program they select. In
addition, there is a $300 Study Abroad Administrative Fee
charged per semester. This fee helps defray the cost of administering
the office, sending materials to students, and processing
overseas registrations and financial aid.
Fortunately, there
are some other sources of funding which can bring study abroad
down to a reasonable amount; some programs actually cost
less than the tuition at Spelman; yet sometimes study abroad
is more expensive than Spelman. There are some study abroad
scholarships, which are handled by the Study Abroad Office
and the Study Abroad Committee. These include but are not
limited to the following:
Spelman College's Study Abroad Program also works with students
who are applying for post-baccalaureate fellowships such
as:
- Fulbright

- Mitchell
Irish
Fellowships
These fellowships are extremely competitive, but they do
cover most costs associated with either one or two years
abroad after receiving the bachelor's degree.
The Watson permits a student to do a year long research project
anywhere in the world outside the grantee's home country and / or the US
JET (Japanese Teachers Exchange), selects students to teach
English in Japanese schools for one year and is renewable
The Rhodes Fellowship covers the costs of a two-year master's
degree only at Oxford University while the Marshall covers
the cost of Master's degree at a university of the student's choice anywhere
in the UK
The Gates covers costs of a masters degree at Cambridge while
the Mitchell award is for Ireland.
Davies-Jackson helps low-income students get a graduate
degree in the UK
In addition to the scholarships mentioned above, the following scholarships
are also available to help students in the Study Abroad Program:
