Education Studies Program and Minor

Mission Statement:

The Education Studies Program promotes academic excellence in the development and preparation of Teacher Leaders who display the intellectual, ethical, and leadership qualities desired for all Spelman graduates.


The primary goals of the teacher preparation programs are to develop:

  • Teacher Leaders who as knowledgeable, effective educational leaders will be innovative action- oriented role models in their classrooms, school districts, and communities throughout the world.

  • Teacher Leaders who will be change agents, advocates for all children, and risk takers inspired to touch the future through teaching.


The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has approved the Education Studies Program and its teacher certification programs.

The Education Studies Program at Spelman College is hosting an accreditation visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in November 2015. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the visiting team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party's relationship to the Education Preparation Provider (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates).

Correspondence, which must be received by NCATE no later than three months prior to visit, will be submitted to the Education Preparation Provider (EPP) for response via NCATE’s Accreditation Information Management System (AIMS). NCATE will not upload anonymous comments to the BOE team or EPPs.
