Education Studies Program
The Education Studies Program at Spelman College prepares teacher leaders for successful careers as educators for children of all ages. Our primary goal is to develop effective role models who serve as agents of positive change for the children they influence, their communities and beyond.
We offer teacher preparation programs with certification, approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Students can choose from:
Child Development Major
Preparation for teacher certification in early childhood education (preschool – fifth grade) or child development minor without certification.
Sequences or Plans of Study
Secondary Education
Preparation for Teacher Certification in Grades 6-12 for major programs in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, History and Political Science
Preschool-12th Grade Education
Preparation for teacher certification for major program in Spanish. The Education Studies Program is perfect for those who display intellectual, ethical and leadership qualities. Students in the Education Studies Program pursing teacher certification or interested in enrolling in education courses must be admitted to the program by following this protocol:
- Provide verification of a passing test score on the GACE I Basic Skills Assessment or exemption based on one of the following:
SAT Score > 1000 (Verbal/Math combined)
ACT Score > 43 (English/Math combined) - Complete an essay that includes an educational philosophy
- Obtain three recommendations, two of which are from faculty members in the Educational Studies Program
- Provide a current transcript that verifies completion of EDU 204 and EDU 206, plus a minimum of 30 credit hours of college coursework with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above in professional studies and major courses.
Applicants must also possess a clear criminal history/arrest record and they must complete an interview.
