Autonomous robots are changing the world--- they are working together to speed search and rescue operations, exploring other planets, and will soon be doing the driving for us in our cars. This talk will highlight some of the technical challenges that have been overcome and some that remain, and will discuss the societal impacts that these systems can have. We'll focus on the MAGIC urban reconnaissance competition (which we won in 2010), the DARPA Urban Challenge (which we completed in 2007), and our ongoing work to build crash-proof cars. In addition, I'll describe opportunities for both paid summer internships and graduate-level research at the University of Michigan. - with Edwin Olson, PH.D. of U of Michigan
