Ayoka Chenzira Celebrates 'HERadventure's' UK Premiere
Spelman College professor and founder of the Digital Image Moving Salon Ayoka Chenzira, Ph.D., continues to take her work around the world. "HERadventure," the groundbreaking film she created in collaboration with her daughter HaJ, will have its UK premiere at the Black Filmmaker International Film Festival in London, on Saturday, July 4.
The festival, heralded for providing a platform for Black world cinema and highlighting British talent, will feature many notable and innovative works of art.
"BFM continues to be at the forefront of exposing audiences to the amazing space of Black World Cinema. Our team is delighted that they are including our interactive movie," Chenzira said.
This year, 60% of the films showing at bfmiff2015 are directed/co-directed by women. From features to documentaries, the films from the UK and around the globe display an array of strong female filmmaking talent.
What is HERadventure?
HERadventure is an online interactive film that interweaves sci-fi fantasy, live action and a first-person game to create a unique storytelling experience. As a story, it incorporates several systems of knowledge including feminism, education, human computer interaction and game play into its overall design.
HERadventure was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
What is the story about? HERadventure
is a coming-of-age story that follows the journey of HER, a reluctant female warrior-in-training from a dying planet. When HER accidentally falls to earth, she discovers the secret of what has been slowly destroying her planet. The journey takes her from being a young woman afraid to take a stand to becoming a superhero.
Why is the project innovative?
HERadventure combines live-action filmmaking with first person interactive gaming elements. The story begins as a linear film with actors. Midway through the story, the audience can become the main character and interact with the environment in order to find out what happens on the rest of the journey. The story highlights social issues that impact the lives of women and girls and it features a young woman-of-color who becomes a superhero. Rarely do we see these elements in a gaming environment. The project is also historic. It is the first interactive film to use live action and gaming produced and directed by two African-American women (Ayoka Chenzira & HaJ) who are also mother and daughter.
HERadventure, a groundbreaking sci-fi multimedia project (film, social media, gaming), is a must see experience for women's studies students and social justice advocates in the academy and the world. This is compelling and provocative storytelling at its best. The socio-political issues it foregrounds threaten our collective survival. Its interactive approach beckons us to engage our most urgent global r
ealities, especially as they impact women and girls. Come aboard! -- Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women's Studies, Spelman College, former President, National Women's Studies
