Japan Studies Minor Requirements

A minor in Japan Studies consists of twenty-four (24) semester hours. Students using Japanese 101 through 202 as the college language requirement start the Japan studies minor with Japanese 303 or 304 or equivalent elsewhere (8 hours). All students are required to take Asian Studies 200 or equivalent elsewhere as assigned by the program director (4 hours).

Core Courses (12 hours):
  • Elementary Japanese- 101 and 102
  • Intermediate Japanese- 201 and 202
  • Advanced Japanese- 303 or 304 (8 hours)
  • Introduction to Asian Studies- Asian Studies 200 or equivalent elsewhere as signed by the program director (4 hours)
Thee elective courses (12 hours) chosen from:
(some courses might be offered as directed study, which will be  assigned by the program director)
  • Modern Japan - History 343A
  • Japan in Asia - Political Science 342
  • Japanese Economic Development - Economics 350
  • Special Topics in Japanese - Japanese 478
  • Introduction to Japanese for Business and Travel - 200
  • Advanced Japanese in Cultural Contexts -Japanese 402
  • Selected Readings in Modern Japanese Literature in Translation - Japanese 306
  • Directed Studies – Asian Studies 400
