Spelman Students Travel to Barcelona
This is the second year of the Spelman-CIEE Inter-Cultural program, but it is the first year that students were afforded the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Spain.

Twenty-seven students from all majors spent two-weeks in Barcelona, where they lived with families and made the city their own. They were accompanied by  Fatemeh Shafiei, Ph.D., chair of political science,  and Margery Ganz, Ph.D., director of the Study Abroad program and professor of history.

The students studied survival Catalan rather than Spanish since Catalonia's main language is Catalan.  They also participated in walking tours of the older and newer parts of the city, saw archeological excavations, heard lectures on the political and economic situation in Catalonia, visited the Picasso Museum,  and studied the architectural vision of Antoni Gaudi.

Eager to get the most out of their CIEE cultural experience, the students learned about the production of  cava, the sparkling wine of the region, and visited the famous Medieval Abbey in Montserrat to view its "Black Madonna."   Spelman scholars also traveled to the European Union and learned how to make culinary favorites like paella, crema catalan and other cultural delicacies.  Harbor cruises and bike tours were some of the students' free-time activities.

Rising Senior Revels in Study-Travel Experience

For biology major Amonie Robins, C'2016,  the 2015 CIEE-Spelman Intercultural Engagement Program trip to Spain was the experience of a life time. From May 10-24, Robins and her peers learned the historical, educational, political, culinary and cultural aspects of the Catalan people.

She took intercultural courses and became immersed in the culture, viewing monumental architecture and visiting Picasso's museum and the home where he grew up before moving to Paris.

Robins also mentored and assisted high school students with speaking the English language and answering questions about American culture.

"This was my very first time going outside of the country, and it was a life-changing experience," Robins said. "It opened up a whole new world for me. I learned so much about myself just by engaging in another culture. It was such an amazing opportunity to travel."
