Yolanda is an Assistant Professor in the department of Computer & Information Sciences at Spelman College where she teaches both entry level and advanced Computer Science courses, co-advises the African American female robotics team known as the SpelBots and supervises undergraduate research in Human Computer Interaction. Her research interests include developing information-based technologies for underserved populations and utilizing video games to promote learning across various domains, including mainstream literacy and foreign language learning. In 2009, Yolanda co-authored her first book about using video games to augment English as Second Language students’ proficiency in vocabulary acquisition. Yolanda accumulated more than twelve years of industry experience working in a variety of roles, including a research staff member at IBM Almaden Research Lab, a senior program manager at Luxcore Networks, and a software engineer and customer technical support advocate at Lucent Technologies. She is a strong advocate for increasing the number of African Americans in Computer Science and conducts technology seminars that expose African Americans to career opportunities in computing. Moreover, Yolanda has facilitated numerous game design and entry level robotics workshops for middle school, high school, and college students.
