From Bahia, Brazil, to Florence, Italy, the faculty at Spelman College frequently travel the globe sharing their expertise, advancing their research, and shepherding Spelman students through educational and cultural international experiences that support the College's strategic goals. Here is a snapshot of their recent activities.

The 2015 Mellon Faculty Seminar in Nantes, France

UNCF  Mellon Faculty Go to FranceThrough the UNCF/Mellon Program, several Spelman faculty participated in the 2015 Faculty International Seminar in Nantes, France from July 5-12, 2015.  The Seminar, "Interrogating the French Empire: Exploring the Historical and Contemporary African Diasporic Engagement and Experience in France," was the first of a three-part series designed to discuss the role of France in the transatlantic slave trade and the attendant consequences of French colonization throughout the world, particularly in the Caribbean and North and West Africa.

Chenzira Celebrates 'HERadventure's' UK Premiere 

Ayoka Chenzira's HERAdventureSpelman College professor and founder of the Digital Image Moving Salon Ayoka Chenzira, Ph.D., continues to take her work around the world. "HERadventure," the groundbreaking film she created in collaboration with her daughter HaJ, celebrated its UK premiere at the Black Filmmaker International Film Festival in London, on Saturday, July 4, 2015. The festival, heralded for providing a platform for Black world cinema and highlighting British talent, featured many notable and innovative works of art.

Spelman Faculty, Staff and Alumnae Attend ‪Black Portraiture in Florence, Italy

Spelman Faculty Go GlobalMembers of the Spelman community attended the Black Portraiture Conference in Florence, Italy from May 28-31, 2015. The conference brought together artists and scholars from an assortment of disciplines and practices, including art history, fashion, dance, theater, and studio art, to engage in wide-ranging conversations about imaging the Black body. In this context, “Black Portraitures II: Imaging the Black Body and Re-staging Histories,” explored the impulses, ideas, and techniques undergirding the production of self-representation and desire, and the exchange of the gaze from the 19th century to the present day in fashion, film, art, and the archives.

Williams Exposes Students to Life in Brazil

Erica Williams and Brazil Study Abroad ProgramErica L. Williams, Ph.D., assistant professor, sociology and anthropology and Spelman students from a range of classifications and majors from biology to comparative women’s studies, sociology and international studies, participated in the “Cultural Encounters in Brazil” program from June 3 to July 9. 

Students enrolled in two classes at Faculdade Social da Bahia, a university located in the beach-front neighborhood of Ondina — Brazilian Culture (with an emphasis on Afro-Brazilian issues) and Portuguese language for beginners. They also enjoyed field trips in and around the historic city of Salvador, attendance at a candomblé religious ceremony, and a visit to the headquarters of Ile Aiye, one of Salvador’s most important carnival and cultural groups. Program participants also interacted with students and faculty from the Instituto Cultural Steve Biko, an organization that focuses on human rights and anti-racism.

Viceisza Travels to Cancun to Explore Experimental Methods in Policy

Spelman Professor Angelino ViceiszaAngelino C.G. Viceisza, Ph.D., assistant professor of economics, whose primary fields of expertise are experimental, behavioral and development economics, attended the second annual Experimental Methods in Policy Conference in Cancun, Mexico in May 2015.

Over the past few years,Viceisza's work has spanned a broad set of topics and regions, which are united by the common element of people’s behavior. Thematically, his research has focused on crime, insurance, remittances, norms, and measurement of people’s preferences; and geographically, his research has focused on El Salvador, Ethiopia, Peru, Senegal and Vietnam among other countries.
