Honors Program, Ethel Waddell Githii
Extracurricular Offerings
Spelman students' learning experiences extend beyond the classroom. The Honors
Program includes extracurricular components that enhance the educational
experiences of participants.
Most first-year Honors Program students who reside on campus
are housed together in the Donald and Isabel Stewart Living
and Learning Center. This arrangement fosters social interaction
and intellectual exchange among students outside the classroom.
The shared living environment provides a foundation for the
development of lasting relationships.
Honors Program students also have opportunities to participate
in a number of special activities including lectures, workshops,
and cultural events. In addition, each year, a number of
students attend conferences sponsored by the National Collegiate
Honors Council, the Southern Regional Honors Council, the
Georgia Honors Council and the National Association of African-American
Honors Programs. At these conferences, students make presentations,
as well as meet and exchange ideas with honors students from
other colleges and universities.
Membership in the Honors Program Students Association (HPSA)
is open to all Honors Program students. The HPSA sponsors
academic, social, and community service activities that benefit
Honors Program students and the broader Spelman community.
The HPSA also cosponsors activities with the honors programs
of other Atlanta University Center institutions.
