Health Careers Program Events



Please join us today, Friday, April 18, for an exciting event: Lifelink of Georgia Awareness Day in the AUC, at Spelman College in the Cosby Academic Center Auditorium beginning at noon.

The host of this event is R & B recording artist and
songwriter, Dwele.


Our theme is "Give a Little, Save a Life." This event is co-sponsored by the Spelman Health Careers Program, Morehouse College Office of Health Professions and the Clark Atlanta University MARC U*STAR Program in collaboration with Lifelink of Georgia organ and tissue procurement organization for the State of Georgia.

The purpose and goal of this special event is to raise awareness and educate students, faculty and staff members about organ and tissue donation and other health-related issues that affect the African American community.

The agenda is as follows:

Cosby Auditorium
12 pm Opening Session with a performance by Dwele
1-2:30 pm Panel discussions including doctors of nephrology,
Donor family members and donor recipients
Viewing of film narrated by gospel artist, Trin-I-Tee 5:7

Manley Student Center, Upper Concourse
11 am-3: pm Health Information Fair

Invited organizations include the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Sickle Cell Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, Bone Marrow Foundation, Georgia Transplant Foundation, CVS Pharmacy just to name a few.

Additionally, Dr. Millard Collier of Atlanta West Healthcare PC will conduct blood pressure checks and Dr. Marlon Jackson of Auburn Dental Care will provide literature and information on the importance of maintaining good oral health.

 

'Operation Smile'
Comes to Spelman

The first HBCU student chapter of Operation Smile International was founded in 2007 at Spelman College by Zerita Buchanan C’2010.

Operation Smile is a non-profit volunteer medical service organization that provides reconstructive facial surgery (primarily for cleft lip and cleft palates) to children and young adults in developing countries and in the United States. Each surgery takes about forty-five minutes, costs a total $750, and leaves an impact that is priceless. Since it’s founding in 1982, over 100,000 lives have been changed.

Operation Smile-Spelman chapter is a Health Careers Program initiative that promotes health awareness and raises funds to sponsor children for a free cleft lip and cleft palate surgery.

Spelman studenst are also able to participate in the Operation Smile International Leadership Conference.

Your willingness to donate whatever amount you feel comfortable with, will forever be remembered by a little child who is given a new chance at life.

Operation Smile is a 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions are tax deductible in accordance to IRS rules and regulations. In an effort to sponsor a child by the end of the 2008 academic school year, we wish to collect all donations by Thursday, May 1, 2008.
