After spending the first 18 years of her life in the foster care system, Victoria Rowell, activist, philanthropist, author and award-winning actor of stage and screen, could have ended up on the street, homeless, in a mental institution or in prison like many of the estimated 12 million children who have “graduated” from the foster care system in the United States. But, Rowell was blessed to be mothered, mentored and motivated by six remarkable women who saw a diamond in the rough in her and began to buff, refine, polish and nurture the little girl who would become the brilliant success she is today.

ATLANTA (Oct. 7, 2008) During the 2007-2008 academic year, approximately 15 percent of Spelman’s student population was treated for cold and flu symptoms. ATLANTA (Sept. 25, 2008) To assist the Spelman College Women’s Research and Resource Center in its work to educate Black women and address issues of race and gender, the Ford Foundation contributed a $1 million grant to establish the Center’s endowment fund. The Ford Foundation, a New York-based international philanthropy whose mission is to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement, announced the grant at the public launch of the endowment initiative on Saturday, Sept. 13.

SPELMAN RECEIVES $1.4 MILLION GRANT TO MENTOR AND DEVELOP FEMALE SCIENTISTS
ATLANTA (April 24, 2008) Spelman College has received a $1.4 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to identify creative new ways to engage students in the biological sciences. STUDENT ART INSTALLATION EMPOWERS CHILDREN TO MAKE POSITIVE CHOICES
ATLANTA (April 20, 2008) The Spelman College Art as a Social Action class, in conjunction with The Study Hall, an afterschool program in the Peoplestown community of Atlanta, present “Power Play: Choosing Empowerment on the Playground.” This 4-by-5-foot interactive outdoor installation uses four diptych panel paintings of life-sized children to promote self-esteem and self-empowerment among second-grade scholars in the program.

ATLANTA (December 7, 2007) According to data collected by the National Science Foundation, out of nearly 2 million computer/information scientists in the United States, African Americans represent 4.8 percent, or 96,600, of professionals working in the field.
