ATLANTA (May 13, 2009) Ieshaah Murphy, Spelman College’s 2009 valedictorian, has picked up her cap and gown, distributed her graduation tickets to family and friends, and is working on her grad party guest list. As she, along with more than 500 fellow graduates, prepares to participate in the 122nd Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 17 at 5 p.m. at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Murphy remembers “At first, I really wasn’t thinking about attending Spelman.”

STUDENTS AT SPELMAN COLLEGE RAISE MONEY FOR LITERACY CHARITY
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 7, 2009) First Book received a $1,500 donation on April 30 to help with its mission to give disadvantaged kids their first book. The donation came from The National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a nonprofit organization that recognizes and engages high-achieving college students at 235 universities.

ATLANTA (May 1, 2009) It was 1984 when Cassi Davis—best known for comedic characters she originated in Tyler Perry’s TV series, stage plays and films — first entered the gates of Spelman College to major in music. But, before she could get that coveted Bachelor of Arts, Cassi heard and answered the call of fame and fortune. Now it’s 2009 and she is back. On Sunday, May 17, 2009, at 5 p.m. at Spelman’s 122nd Commencement, Davis will finally receive her degree in music.
