We sincerely hope that you can join this commemoration and continuation of Toni Cade Bambara’s example of Black feminist scholar-activism.

This annual salute to premiere wordsmith Toni Cade Bambara, offers a vital opportunity to embrace ‘the dance of character and community,’ that embodied the works of this womanist scholar and activist.

Conference sessions include: reproductive rights and women's health; images of women in the media and popular culture; black feminisms; women's art and creativity; women's global & transnational activism; gendered economics and other topics that inform our internal and external world.

The Toni Cade Bambara Conference, a student-organized event, has steadily grown over the past eight years, giving young activists, scholars and artists a strong platform from which to share research, experiences and expressions.

Participants come from all over the United States, including visiting international scholars. This conference, co-founded by
M. Bahati Kuumba, is the culminating activity of the Toni Cade Bambara Writer/Scholar/Activist Program and Collective which sponsors an annual lecture and workshop series; a student collective; and an annual newsletter, Sisters of the Word.

The Toni Cade Bambara Writers/Scholars/Activists program builds on the long tradition of Black feminist scholar-activism at Spelman College. This unique internship/mentoring program, founded in 1985 as the Toni Cade Bambara Writer/Scholar project, was cosponsored initially with the Comprehensive Writing Program and the SAGE editorial collective.

The program bears the name of Toni Cade Bambara (1939-1995), a prolific Black feminist scholar, writer, filmmaker, editor, teacher and activist. The program provides opportunities for Spelman and Atlanta University Center (AUC) undergraduate students of all disciplines to develop and demonstrate their scholarly, critical/analytical, and activist skills through written expression.

Toni Cade Bambara Scholars are also exposed to and able to engage in dialogue with, African and African diasporan writers/scholars/activists in a range of forums throughout the academic year. The Toni Cade Bambara program sponsors an annual lecture and workshop series; a student collective; scholar-activist conferences; and an annual newsletter, Sisters of the Word.
