Leader to Leader Dialogues
What does it take to lead in the 21 st century? During this event, Spelman’s president, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, attempts to answer this question through in-depth conversations with CEOs from various corporations.
Annual Johnnetta B. Cole Lecture
In bringing prominent African American women leaders to Spelman, the Johnnetta B. Cole Lecture supports LEADS’ efforts to cultivate a forum for seasoned leaders to share experiences and dialogue on issues critical to women leaders. Speakers are experts in fields about which Dr. Cole is passionate including justice, diversity, the health and safety of women, children, and underserved populations around the globe.
Alumnae Voices
During this annual event, notable Spelman alumnae who are prominent in their fields return to Spelman to interact with students and speak on leadership issues for the 21 st century.
Biennial Leadership and Women of Color Conference
This two-day conference brings together more than 700 women leaders of different races and ethnicities to engage in authentic dialogue relative to women in the workplace and to exchange ideas and best practices to promote multicultural leadership. Conference activities include symposiums, the Legacy of Leadership Awards Luncheon, and the Mary McLeod Bethune/Eleanor Roosevelt Conversation on Race, Class and Gender.
Operation Hope
Operation Hope, America’s first nonprofit social investment banking organization, uses public and private partnerships and strategic alliances to eradicate poverty and build wealth in underserved communities. In conjunction with LEADS, Operation Hope will host SPELfinance, a one-day conference designed to help individuals improve their personal finances.
Kenyetta Jazz Festival
Co-sponsored by the Spelman Music Department, the Spelman Jazz Ensemble and LEADS, this biennial event showcases women jazz artists.
Mary McLeod Bethune and Eleanor Roosevelt Conversation on Race
In 2007, this dynamic and unique event brought together the great- grandniece of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Rev. Mazie Butler Ferguson, and the granddaughter of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, to discuss the extraordinary bond shared by their respective family members and their influence on the movements for racial and gender equality. Moderated by award-winning author, poet and playwright Pearl Cleage, C’71, the discussion also examined the Bethune and Roosevelt legacies and how their families have been profoundly influenced by the work, wisdom and courage of these respected world citizens.
