Dr. Dorothy Height and Blanche Williams Convene the First Annual 2008
National Black Women’s Town Hall Meeting in Washington, DC this Summer!
Washington, D.C. -- Dorothy Height, Ph.D., and the Research, Public Policy and Information Center of the National Council of Negro Women in association with Blanche Williams, National XM Radio talk show host, leading black women’s organizations, educators, and activists will convene the first National Black Women’s Town Hall Meeting on Friday, July 11, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the NCNW headquarters located at 633 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20004.
In 2008, Black women face a new set of forces designed to cripple the potential of our future
mothers and scholars. How can we stand by and remain silent when African-American women lead in health disparities and death related to heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, diabetes, obesity and HIV/AIDS; or get paid only 68 cents for every dollar earned by white men, or when more than 29 percent of our sisters are victims of intimate partner violence, or when countless others face poverty, go without healthcare, or lack access to higher education?
The first National Black Women’s Town Hall Meeting will be moderated by Blanche
Williams, National XM Radio talk show host with the legendary Dr. Dorothy Height, now 96 years old, leading a distinguished panel of women including Faye Wattleton, Center for the Advancement of Women; Jane Smith, Ed .D., executive director of LEADS at Spelman College, Michelle Bernard, Independent
Women's Forum; Eleanor Hinton-Hoytt, Black Women's Health Imperative; Daphne Valerius, filmmaker; Tricia Bent-Goodley, Ph.D., Howard University; and Melanie Campbell, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation.
Also invited are Michelle Obama, wife of Senator Barack Obama and Barbara McKinzie, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, recipient of the 2008
"Landmark of Greatness Award."
