Spelman College Board of Trustees: Elected 2012

Anita Foster is an international studies major from Washington, DC. As a globally aware woman, Anita has traveled to India to study the opportunities and constraints of college-educated women in the 21st century and Haiti to help collegiate level students better understand the multiple dynamics of Haiti. Although she has made an impact on the lives of others abroad, she has also been a positive impact in the lives of individuals on Spelman’s campus as a Residential Advisor and the Founder of the P.O.I.S.E. plan (Preparing Outstanding Individuals for Social Excellence).

Placing an emphasis on service and scholarship, Anita has volunteered with Obama for America for the past five years along with the DC College Success Foundation while being a Wal-Mart First Generation Scholar, Benjamin Gilman Scholar, DC Achiever Scholar, AEDC Scholar, and John Skirball Scholar. Her first writing publication titled, “Why are H1B Visas important for Business,” was published by the Potomac Research Group in Washington, D.C. Her second publication is linked to the School of International Training's website with an abstract of her final report for her academic course in India. The study is titled: "The Rise of the Last Women." Of the 18 students who participated in the program, Anita was honored to be chosen as one of the three students to have researched published through the program.

In May of 2012, Anita became an Education Reform Now Advocacy Fellow where she leads voter ID initiatives in Brooklyn, N.Y. Beginning in July of 2012, Anita will intern with U.S. African Development Foundation in Washington, D.C. as the communications Intern under the foundation’s President. Anita is interested in serving as a Fulbright Scholar after graduating from Spelman College, and, subsequently interested in returning to the D.C. Metropolitan area to pursue a Masters in International development.

As Anita approaches her senior year at Spelman, she is looking forward to finding ways to capture the student body’s concerns and to provide means for student’s to voice their opinions and to promote a sisterly campus. Anita will also concentrate her efforts on Spelman’s Registered Student Organizations in hopes that Student Government will serve as a intermediary between the organizations and the student body.   Anita is honored to work for the betterment of Spelman College as she serves and promotes the student body as the 2012-2013 SGA President
