President’s Safety Net Fund/Starfish Initiative

Starfish Story

In the spring of 2008, the President’s Safety Net Fund was created to assist students who were impacted by the credit crunch precipitated by the economic downturn. During fiscal year 2009, alumnae, parents and friends contributed over $500,000 to ensure 100 students who were negatively impacted by the economy complete their studies at Spelman.

Currently, there are many students who have unpaid balances. With such a high level of loan dependence and increasing credit restrictions, students have had trouble borrowing the money they need. The worst thing that can happen is that they must leave school, thousands of dollars in debt, and will be unable to finish their education.

For 128 years Spelman has demonstrated our ability to provide a transformational education for economically disadvantaged students despite our limited resources. In the midst of our nation’s education crisis, we are a beacon of hope. Yet, without intervention, in this economy many of our students are at tremendous risk. We can’t fail them now.
