Staffing Announcement: Title IX and Compliance Director

September 14, 2015

Dear Spelman Community,

I am very pleased to announce the arrival of Spelman College's new Title IX and Compliance Director, Katrina Oliver. Title IX is the federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational institutions' programs and activities. In her role at Spelman, Ms. Oliver will be responsible for coordinating the College’s compliance with Title IX, including overseeing all related campus policies, procedures, and complaints of sex discrimination, including sexual violence, and identifying and addressing any patterns or systemic problems that arise during the review of such complaints. Her responsibilities will also include sex discrimination education, training and prevention for the Spelman community.

Most recently, Ms. Oliver served as the assistant director of equity and diversity at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she assisted in planning, managing, and directing complaint and grievance resolutions for all non-discrimination, sexual harassment and search policies, including equal employment opportunity, affirmative action and Title IX. She was also involved in interpreting obligations under Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, the American Disabilities Act, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, as well as other state and federal civil rights regulations and guidelines.

Previously, Ms. Oliver served as an equal opportunity specialist (investigator) for the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR), where she enforced civil rights laws by processing cases through the interpretation and application of OCR regulations. In this capacity, she also served on several committees, including those associated with extern recruitment, the Freedom of Information Act and complaint resolutions.

Active in numerous leadership, legal, and community service organizations, Ms. Oliver holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in public policy studies from Duke University, a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Georgia and a Master of Science degree in higher education administration and organizational management from Drexel University. Her professional training includes diversity, compensation discrimination, religious accommodations, public sector employment law, equal opportunity, early compliant resolution, mediation and peer counseling. Ms. Oliver will begin her new role at Spelman on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

As you know Spelman takes issues of discrimination seriously and the role of Title IX and compliance director is vital to ensuring a safe and supported learning environment for our students. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Oliver to Spelman as she brings her significant expertise and track record to our campus.
